Book Signing: Todos Santos by Edward and Shirley Wright 2/25/2012 10:00 AM - 2/25/2012 12:00 PM
The public is invited to attend a book signing ofTodos Santosand meet with its authors at the Pioneer Museum on the morning of February 25th. Todos Santoswritten by Edward and Shirley Wright of Coppell, Texas tells the story of Wright’s multi-generation pioneer and ranching family from Laredo and Zavala County. Ed’s relatives are still involved with ranching in the area where he spent much of his youth at his grandparent’s ranch listening to tales of the cattle business that have long held a fascination for him. Growing up in Laredo and influenced by the Mexican culture Ed grew up speaking Spanish which provides an in depth insight into the stories of the border region. As an adult he pursued other interests, which included visits to Scotland where he researched Scottish history and sailing ships. Employing that information, he delved into further research on Texas history which has been melded along with family anecdotes, to tell a special story of south Texas, through the eyes of those who lived it.
Todos Santosisa Texas/Scotland story, one that follows the Ridgeway and Park families and their associates, on a twenty-five year journey through Scotland and Texas. Based on a true story, it relates experiences with courtship, the potato famine and eviction in Scotland, and then opportunity for emigration to the new state of Texas. The ocean voyage in 1850 sees tragedy and then the excitement of arrival at the seaport of Indianola– second largest port in the new state. Multiple characters, European, Mexican and German, provide a picture of early Texas pioneers, who find themselves fighting raiding Indians, learning the cattle industry and then coping with several Civil War battles throughout South Texas.
Shirley Wright, the co-author of the story was responsible for development of many of the characters and is responsible for having edited the final version of the book.
Both Ed and Shirley will be signing their book in the Museum Shop of the Pioneer Museum on Saturday, February 25 from 10:00 A. M. until noon.
The book is available for purchase at the Pioneer Museum at 325 W. Main in Fredericksburg.

“Resinate”an art show featuring the colorfully creative side of Kurtis Karr opens with a reception on Friday, March 2ndfrom 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm duringFirst Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg. Please join us at Artisans at Rocky Hill for this premier showing of Kurtis’ latest art pieces. Wines by Torre di Pietra will be served along with cheeses from the Amish Market.
Saturday, March 3rdfrom 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm Kurtis will wrap, splash, sprinkle&“resinate” his canvases for viewers interested in his uniquely imaginative processes.
Kurtis’ show“Resinate”will be available at Artisans for show and sale through Saturday, March 17th. 15 to 20 of Kurtis’ latest pieces will be on display!
Kurtis Karr loves experimenting with unconventional mediums in a continual effort to capture a sense of the magical. His work is primarily textural incorporating a subtle intermingling of regular patterns and amorphous shimmering colors. As far as art education is concerned - although Kurtis did take several traditional art classes throughout his early school and college years– he is primarily self-taught in all the styles, techniques and mediums he currently employs. It was not until the last decade did Kurtis ever have the courage to use nontraditional mediums and texture in his work or to delve into the purely abstract. It was a sort of an early mid-life crisis, he supposes. Whatever the case, Kurtis loves it. He would never again consider doing anything that lacked color and texture or was purely representational.
Some people might accuse Kurtis of being inconsistent but he keeps his work fresh by continually experimenting with new techniques, materials or mediums. He usually produces only limited series of a particular style of work. If Kurtis develops a specific process or system for creating a piece, he feels his work is inexorably beginning to lose its spontaneity and ultimately, its joy of creation.
For Kurtis Karr, the hardest part of creating art is knowing how and when to quit. This is only because he loves the artistic process so much that he literallyhatesfor it to end. For Kurtis, the finished work is just a by-product of the actual process. It is like a souvenir or vacation photograph which serves as a bittersweet reminder of a happy moment forever lost to time.

A brief history of Pecan Creek School (#15 on the driving map, located at 3410 Pecan Creek Road):Built in 1916. Consolidated in 1955. Wooden school desks were either double or single with a shelf underneath for items such as cups, pens, and books. Seating was arranged by grade. Several schools still have the original maps, world globes, bookcases, science cases, and the teacher's desk. One of the most important features was the "recitation bench" close to the teacher's desk. Here a particular grade sat for their lesson or recitation.
Current activities:The Pecan Creek Community Club meets monthly on the 2nd Sunday afternoon to play cards and dominoes, with refreshments being served after a short meeting. An annual picnic or fish fry is also held each summer on the school grounds.
A brief history of Cherry Spring School (#14 on the driving map, located at 5973 Ranch Road 2323):Built in 1885. Pavilion built in 1935. Consolidated in 1972. The pavilion typically had a stage area for school plays with a "school curtain", providing the backdrop scene. Students painted the landscape scenes on canvas for the annual school play. Like a frame, the names of local merchants were placed around the edge. The curtain was rolled up for most of the year and hung above the stage. There are still 6 original curtains and several of the merchants listed are still in business today.
Current activities:The Cherry Spring Community Club now regularly uses the schoolhouse and pavilion for their meetings. They meet monthly on the second Friday evening to play "42" dominoes and the fourth Friday evening to play pinochle cards. On the second Saturday in September, club members, families, and friends also hold a BBQ picnic.

There could be as many as 8 grades in one room, and older students helped younger ones. On Fridays there would be spelling bees.
Current activities:Williams Creek (Albert) School has established a community club. In 2010, the Club met on January 30, March 27, May 29, July 24, and September 25 at 2:30 pm for card and domino games and a social, meeting at 4:30 pm with a meal following. Consolidated in 1960. On holidays, such as Washington's Birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, students presented programs. All parts were memorized and families and the community were invited. Christmas plays were held inside this school with the front area having a curtain, and the students using a side window for the entrance and exit. Santa Claus handed out oranges, apples, and candy, and lit the candles on the Christmas tree. One year his beard caught on fire. He quickly exited through the window and headed for the well.
Current activities:The first community club was organized in 1960. It includes third and fourth generations of former students and neighbors. The Club meets quarterly throughout the year for a social. The restored building is used for weddings, reunions, meetings, and other community activities.A brief history of Luckenbach School (#5 on the driving map, located at 3566 Luckenbach Road):Built in 1881. Expanded in 1905. Consolidated in 1964. An old-fashioned school bell summoned the children to class at 9:00 am, six days a week. Boys lined up on the right and girls on the left. During recess, children played games such as "Andy-over", "Stink Base", Dodge Ball", "Drop the hankie", and "Kick the can." At 4:00 pm, at the end of the day, the older boys had to bring in firewood for the stove. and the girls had to sweep the floor. First graders were responsible for cleaning the erasers.
Current activities:The Luckenbach Community Club was organized and currently meets monthly on the 1st and 2nd Friday evenings and 4th Sunday afternoon to play pinochle cards. The building is also a site for precinct voting for state and federal elections. Consolidated in 1949. One of four schools which still has the original teacherage, the house where the teacher lived. This limestone two-room teacherage was built in 1887, and later a frame kitchen, storeroom, and smokehouse was erected. It was used until 1949 when Grapetown School District was consolidated with Rocky Hill School District as part of the rural school consolidation in Texas.
Current activities:In 1950, residents of the Grapetown community formed the Grapetown Community Club and purchased the property from the Rocky Hill School District.
